Class 10B had the privilege of visiting St. Teresa's Mercy Home as part of our outreach programme. The visit was a truly meaningful experience that helped us understand the importance of compassion, gratitude, and service towards the less fortunate.
The congregation was founded in 1984 and first began its mission in Nagpur before expanding to Bengaluru and Tamil Nadu. With around 200–300 sisters serving under the congregation, its headquarters, once located in France, is now in Rome. Guided by the motto of serving the poor, helpless, downtrodden, elderly, and differently abled, the congregation manages hospitals, schools, and mercy homes, with branches in Mysore and Hassan.
At present, the Mercy Home cares for 32 occupants, including elderly people, differently abled individuals, and some residents who have lived there since childhood. The sisters explained that the Home accepts people only in genuine cases of need and encourages families, whenever possible, to care for their elderly loved ones instead of admitting them to the Home.
The residents wake up at 7:00 a.m., attend morning prayers, have breakfast, perform their assigned responsibilities, continue with activities, lunch, exercise, rest, tea and snacks, evening prayers, a walk, television together, supper, thanksgiving prayers, and retire for the night at 9:00 p.m.
Our class presented songs and dances, and one resident, Regina, happily joined us with a dance. We also donated essential items required by the Mercy Home to support their daily needs.
The visit taught us valuable lessons about kindness, gratitude, and the joy of selfless service. We returned with thankful hearts, grateful to God for His blessings and sincerely appreciative of our school for giving us this opportunity to understand the value of caring for others and cherishing what we have. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Principal, Sr.Alpana, our Class Teacher, Miss Suman, and our Co-Class Teacher, Miss Jibi, for their constant guidance, encouragement, and for making this meaningful outreach programme a memorable learning experience for all of us.
