“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”
— Mother Teresa
Every year, Sophia High School hosts an Outreach Program, and our class, 9B,
visited the Missionaries of Charity on August 2, 2025. The Missionaries of Charity
is a home for Destitute Women, and their mission is to serve the needy with
compassion, dignity, and love.
The Missionaries of Charity was founded by Mother Teresa who established this
center in 1973. This missionary is located in Yelahanka. Sisters run this home
and currently, there are 78 inmates; most of the women are senior citizens, and
some are mentally challenged. There are also a few visually impaired children.
Some inmates were brought in by their families, while many were found
abandoned on the streets.
When we reached there, we all sang, danced, and spent time with the inmates.
Despite the language barriers, we connected through smiles and small gestures.
We spoke with some of the women and learned about their pasts and how the
missionary helped them.
Many of whom felt they had once been alone in the world, now live in a home
filled with people who love and care for them.
A memorable moment was when one of the women expressed her gratitude to
us. Before we left, the residents prayed for us, and their blessings felt deeply
sincere and powerful.
What stood out the most was the strong sense of community and humanity.
Despite the suffering many had experienced, there was a great deal of love,
laughter, and faith. The sisters worked tirelessly with so much dedication, not for
praise or recognition but simply to help people in need.
We realized how much we take for granted, and we learnt that even
the smallest acts of kindness can be very meaningful. Seeing how these amazing
women, once left behind, now live with hope and dignity is a memory we will
always cherish.
