Sophia High School organised a Subject Orientation and Career Guidance
Session on 26 September 2026 for the parents and students of Standard 10, to
provide clarity on the academic choices and opportunities available after Grade
10.
The session began with an overview of the ISC programme and the range of
subjects offered at Sophia. The flexibility of the curriculum was highlighted, with
students encouraged to consider their interests, strengths and aspirations while
making their subject choices. The Inter-Disciplinary Area was also introduced as
an opportunity to explore areas beyond core academic subjects.
The orientation emphasised that Classes 11 and 12 are about more than
academic performance. Along with developing strong conceptual understanding,
students have opportunities to build communication, critical thinking,
collaboration, initiative and application skills through projects, practical work and
experiences beyond the classroom.
The session also showcased opportunities available to students through
leadership and student-led events, community engagement, skill-building
programmes, educational excursions, wellbeing initiatives and national and
international learning opportunities. These experiences enable students to
explore their interests while developing confidence and transferable skills.
The Career Guidance Session was led by Ms. Nithya Raghunath, Career
Counsellor, who spoke on the theme “Beyond Marks”.
The session encouraged parents and students to look beyond academic scores
and consider the capabilities that will help young people navigate an evolving
world. The discussion focused on critical thinking, creativity, communication,
collaboration, adaptability and digital, AI, data and media literacy.
The importance of developing skills through practice and everyday experiences
was also emphasised. Sports, reading, hobbies, projects, volunteering and real-
life activities can all contribute to a student’s development.
The session further explored interdisciplinary learning and demonstrated how
real-world challenges draw upon different areas of knowledge. Parents and
students were encouraged to consider subject selection not simply in terms of a
particular career, but also in terms of interests, aptitude, developing skills and
opportunities for exploration.
The discussion also addressed competitive examinations such as JEE, NEET,
CLAT and CA Foundation, emphasising the importance of strong conceptual
understanding alongside focused preparation for specific entrance examinations.
The programme concluded with a reflection on the role of parents in supporting
their children’s choices. Rather than deciding a child’s future for them, parents
were encouraged to help them understand themselves, explore possibilities,
develop relevant skills and gradually become confident decision-makers.
The session offered students and parents an opportunity to look beyond marks
and immediate career choices, and to view education as a journey of building
knowledge, capabilities, experiences and the confidence to navigate the future.
