Sophia High school has always counted itself fortunate to have the role of facilitators as her students grow up to be enlightened and compassionate individuals. The school has made an effort to work in tandem with the parents towards the development of their precious children. The meetings between parents and teachers held regularly during the school year has always been important to build this cooperation. With the teaching
medium this year being revolutionary in its mode, the meetings also had to be planned similarly. Keeping all social distancing norms in mind, the school decided to conduct our Parent Teacher Meetings too, online.
Dates were decided, time slots allocated and the parents were informed of the schedule and procedure via a circular. The meetings were fixed for dates after the parents had received the e-report cards of their wards. The class teachers used the Google Classroom Meet forum and the Whatsapp class groups to efficiently coordinate and conduct individual meetings with the parents of each child in the class. Parents were appraised on the students’ performance in curricular as well as co-curricular fields.
Appointments were scheduled for parents who wished to meet the individual subject teachers too. Teachers and the parents discussed the difficulties faced in the new mode of instruction and attempted to arrive at suitable solutions keeping all parameters in mind.
Almost all parents were appreciative of the efforts the school has taken to schedule and conduct online classes as well as online exams for the children this year. They praised the school for ensuring that the children were not taxed either by the schedule of the online classes or the pace of teaching within each class. The parents also commended the school for the conduct of online exams for all classes and the multi-tier assessment that was conducted by the teachers. They also applauded the use of the Classroom stream as well as Whatsapp to keep the parents apprised of any information regarding the classes and students.
The parents also wished to clarify a few things. Most of the parents were keen on knowing what plans the school had with regard to the practicals, conduct of further exams, reopening of the campus etc. The parents of students who are to face the Board examinations this year were particularly anxious about the uncertainty in the dates and mode of the examinations to be held. The teachers, on behalf of the school, assured the parents that they would follow directives from the government as well as the Council and would not compromise on the safety and health of their children.
Considering how people on both sides of the equation had to face many challenges and adapt to changes, this meeting was useful to gauge the progress made and the changes required. The meeting between the parents and the teachers proved to be an effective point of evaluation of the classes and assessments held in this academic year.
