Report on SMUN 2024

“The hopes of the world rest on young people.” - Antonio Guterres

A Model United Nations conference is an entry into the world of international affairs, peace and security for students. It gives the future citizens of the world the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, find solutions to important issues currently facing the world and hone a multitude of skills, such as diplomacy, public speaking and research.

Sophia High School hosted the 15th edition of its annual MUN conference, SMUN, on the 8th, 9th and 10th of August, 2024. SMUN is the most eagerly awaited event at Sophia, and this year it exceeded all expectations. With a whopping 314 delegates from 15 schools, SMUN 2024 broke all previous records. This year being the Platinum Jubilee of Sophia made this achievement even more special.

The conference began with the opening ceremony where the delegates were addressed by our Principal, Sr. Alpana, our Chief Guest, Ms. Shwetha Krishnappa and the Secretary General, Zoya Zahed. Their poignant speeches motivated and inspired all those who were present, giving impetus to the conference and igniting the minds of the delegates.

There were six committees, namely the All India Political Parties Meet discussing the transition in our criminal laws with special emphasis on rape laws and criminal proceedings, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime tackling Afghanistan’s Narcotics Challenge and the Drug Epidemic, the United Nations Human Rights Council discussing workers' rights and child labour with special focus on the copper and cobalt mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Nations Security Council discussing the question of Palestine, the Eurasian Stakeholders Summit discussing the fall of the USSR and finally, the Continuous Crisis Committee discussing the African Union, resolving turmoil in the African countries.

After three days of exhilarating debates, forging diplomatic alliances and engaging in fruitful discussions, the Sophia Model United Nations conference came to an end. The delegates of each committee performed exceptionally well, delivering eloquent speeches and proposing creative solutions. The delegation from St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School carried away the Best Delegation Award. SMUN 2024 was a grand success and will forever be etched into the golden pages of the history of Sophia High School.
