VIII' A
“Pathways to Progress: Supporting Individuals with Cognitive Challenges’’

On the 5 th of October 2024, around 8 in the morning, the class of VIII A left for their outreach destination, which was a shelter for men with mental retardation, in a government BMTC bus arranged by the school. We reached Thirumugha Ashram in Vidyaranyapura by 9 a.m. The main aim of the Ashram was to uplift individuals by helping them overcome challenges and experience a sense of belongingness within a loving community.

When we arrived at the shelter around 60 such men who were mentally retarded were present there, who were picked up from the streets. The event was marked with a small program arranged by the students of the class which included dancing, singing and small speeches in regional languages. The inmates of the shelter truly enjoyed the program as they were singing and dancing along with students. Some even sang their own songs while others started dancing to their own beats. Donations were surplus.

Even though the management of the school was the main sponsor, the students also brought in their donations with all their hearts. Groceries, cereals and pulses, toiletries, cookies and snacks, etc. were a few among the donations. The interactions with the inmates of the shelter who had lots of experiences and fun-filled stories was truly an enriching and heart-filling event. With their hearts full, the students left the shelter at around 11am.
