CHILD RIGHTS SEMINAR FOR STAFF

The programme began with a welcome note delivered by Ms. Arnavaz in the ISC Hall on the 2nd floor. Sr. Kripa presented the speaker with a sapling. The programme began at 10:30 AM.
Ms. Sujatha briefed the staff about the sections of UNCRC (United Nations Convention on Rights of the Child), KSCPC (Karnataka State Child Protection Committee) and POCSO.

The speaker highlighted the following sections of the UNCRC
  • Definition of a child
  • Anti-discrimination policy
  • Best interest of the child
  • Uniqueness of every child
  • Right to expression
  • Forum-to create an atmosphere to allow them access to express
  • Privacy
  • Duty of media
  • Protection against sexual abuse
  • Protection from any harassment-corporal, verbal, humiliation

POCSO Act 2012 was discussed in detail. (Protection of Children against Sexual Offences) Suggestions given to the teachers keeping in mind POCSO were
  • Refrain from making videos without consent
  • Watch your words and actions
  • Sentence under POCSO is minimum 3 years to Life imprisonment
  • School must draft the Child Protection Policy.
  • SOPs should be designed for legal protection
  • Every rule should be concrete with proof
  • CPP timeline should be mentioned and adhered to
  • Pro-active measures should be taken to protect children
  • Close monitoring of activities involving children should be kept
  • CCTV should be mandatory everywhere inside campus
  • Follow rules under KSCPC
  • Life skills sessions and PT should not be compromised
  • Documentation of every behavior by class teachers is a must.

The session was interactive and an eye opener towards the legal protection the children have and we must upkeep the same. The session ended at 11:40 AM. The same session was then conducted for the maintenance staff from 12:15 to 12:45 PM supervised by Sr. Shiny. Ms. Geetha welcomed the speaker and Sr. Shiny presented her with a token of appreciation.
